Got a Craving?

Spending time in the Word is one of the most important things I can encourage you to do. The Apostle Peter wrote this:

1 Peter 2:2a (NIV)
2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,

Spiritual milk is a reference to the Word of God, the Bible. We are to crave or desire or long for the Word of God. If you don’t have a craving, a desire, a longing for the Word, you need to get one. This isn’t a suggestion from Peter, it is much more of a command. A desire is more than an emotion. A desire is an act of the will. As believers we can choose to desire what is right and to let go of what isn’t. That is why Peter is issuing us a command to desire the Word. If we do not have a desire for the Word it is on us.

1 Peter 2:2b (NIV)
2 … so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,

If we are not spending time in the Word of God we will not grow in our spiritual life. When we spend time in the Word, the Spirit is at work in us gradually conforming us to be more like Jesus in the way we live.

If you want to experience the real, full, abundant, now and forever life that Jesus wants you to have, you have to spend time in His word. If you are not, why? Can I remind you that there is a battle going on. We have a very enemy who wants to steal life from you. He is sneaky, tricky, and deceitful. Is it possible that he might be throwing some deceit your way which keeps you from spending time in the Word which is stealing real life away from you and causing you to settle for a life that is so much less than it could be? I think there are so many things competing for our attention that we get distracted from what is most important. For example, do you ever sit down to check your email, and all of a sudden you realize what should have taken five minutes has led you down bunny trails that took hours. Something in your email caused you to Google something, which took you on two more searches to see if it was true or not, and then you opened up your Facebook just to quickly see if there was any new pictures of the grand kids and then you saw something that takes you on another journey, and then you go back to your email and you see a headline of some breaking story or scandal and then you need to find out what that is about and then a quick game of Sudoku leads to an impromptu online tournament and on and on. And yet the Psalmist said:

Psalm 1:1-3 (NIV)
1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

Take time every day to read His book. Get a plan and stick to it. I have several different plans on the website. If you are not doing any sort of daily reading, start with the Proverbs. Just read a chapter a day. But start somewhere. Develop a craving for the Word!
