Day 4 – Cardio Training

We are going to continue to work on getting focused as we consider Hebrews 10:21 today.

Hebrews 10:21 (NIV)
21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

I don’t think the word great is really enough to describe Jesus. He is so much more than great, that Great seems limiting. I have been reading the book of Deuteronomy this last few weeks. Among other things, Deuteronomy talks about everything that the high priest had to do in order to go into the most Holy Place once a year. There were so many rules and regulations that needed to be carried out to the letter in order for the high priest to enter into the presence of God. And yet, Jesus, our high priest has taken care of all of it at the cross. He fulfilled the requirements and made it possible for us to enter into the most holy place 24/7. In the OT, if a priest had any noticeable imperfection he could not enter into the most holy place, something as simple as a boil or a skin blemish, and he was out. In Christ, we have access to the Most Holy Place, even with all our blemishes. Jesus has made it possible for us. He is our great priest. Let’s talk about a few of the things that make Him great, or better than great.

Day 4 – Points to Ponder

In Christ, we have a great priest who…

1. …sympathizes with us

Hebrews 4:15-16 (NIV)
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

He sympathizes with us, He understands us. He knows what it is like to live in this world. He sympathizes with us, He understands us. He knows what it is like to live in this world. He understands our struggles.

We all have struggles. One of the things I struggle with is a disease I call mywayitis. I don’t drive really fast, I do the speed limit, but if you want to do less than the speed limit, please do it in the right hand lane. I am entitled to drive by you in the left hand lane. That is what it is there for. Mywayitis tends to make me haughty, mean and often stupid. As hard as I try I can’t see Jesus driving his pickup to within a few inches of someone’s bumper to try and help them remember what the left lane is for.

If you want to drive slowly in the left lane, then bless your heart (and I apologize to the driver of a white Ford Escort on the turnpike Friday at about 2:00).

Fortunately, Jesus understands me. Because He understands, (He never sinned like we all have) we can approach the throne with confidence to receive mercy and grace to help us in our time of need. He is there to help us in our time of need. Not to point out our weaknesses, not to shame us, not to point the finger at us for our failures and sins, but to help us with His mercy and grace.

In Christ, we have a great priest who…

2. …is our model for life and ministry

He showed us how to live and how to experience real life. He exposed religious self-righteousness for what it is and then demonstrated what humanity was supposed to look like. Our throne room perspective should help us to

a. See like He sees

Matthew 9:36 (NIV)
36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

b. Think like He thinks

Philippians 2:5 (NIV)
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

c. Serve like He serves

Mark 10:45 (NIV)
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

d. Love like He loves

John 13:34 (NIV)
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

As we learn to do what He did we begin to experience the kind of life He has created us for.

In Christ, we have a great priest who…

3. …has made a way that we can now be heavenly

1 Corinthians 15:48-49 (MSG)
48 The First Man was made out of earth, and people since then are earthy; the Second Man was made out of heaven, and people now can be heavenly. 49 In the same way that we’ve worked from our earthy origins, let’s embrace our heavenly ends.

I like verse 49. In the way that we have all worked from our earthy origins…we have excelled at sin, selfishness, contempt – both self and other centered, we have approached life from the old dead way of thinking of our earthy origins, now in the same way, with as much enthusiasm and effort that you have put in the earthy ways, embrace His ways, heavenly ways, throne room ways, Kingdom of God ways. Life, full life, heavenly life, eternal life is available to you to experience now. Push into His presence every day. Remember who your great priest is who made it all possible. I am going into the Most Holy Place because of Him and what He has done. I am going to approach the throne of grace with confidence because I need it, not because I deserve it, but because I am desperate for His presence so that I can live the life He has created me for, a life with throne room perspective, seeing like he sees, thinking like he thinks, serving like he serves, loving like he loves, doing what He did.
